At an Oct. 19 Carmel City Council meeting, Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts CEO Jeff McDermott said that since 2023, the Center's holiday ticket sales have fallen 20 percent and attendance has fallen 24 percent, a loss of $66,000 in revenue, as Current in Carmel reported. The holiday season has usually been the Center's strongest stretch. Over those same years, the share of people who bought a holiday ticket and never showed up has grown to almost double the rate at other shows.
The market is still growing, and the audience next door is the group adjusting around it. That changes how a December evening on the campus should be planned. The Carmel Christkindlmarkt opens Saturday, Nov. 21, and runs through Dec. 24. The Palladium and the Tarkington have shows on most of those weekends.
What the Center Told the Council
McDermott described the problem in plain terms.
"We are becoming somewhat victims of what has become a very crowded campus during the holiday season."
He expects the no-show numbers to turn into lost sales. Ticket buyers who skip shows because of traffic and parking, he told the council, eventually "simply won't buy those tickets." He said the pressure reaches other neighbors too. Rooms at Hotel Carmichael typically sell out during market season, yet guest satisfaction is at its lowest in that same window.
The market answered in a statement to Current, saying "parking, navigation and accessibility are top priorities for the 2026 market season." A task force has been meeting on the issue. Its members represent the City of Carmel, the Christkindlmarkt, the Center, Hotel Carmichael and REI, which manages the building that houses The Tarkington. The group set aside one idea for the short term: limiting public garage access to performance ticket holders, which would violate a city agreement to keep the garage open to the whole campus. For this season it recommended three steps:
- Dedicated rideshare locations
- More funding for shuttles
- A traffic and parking study conducted while the market is open
Councilor Jeff Worrell, who serves on the task force, said there is "no easy answer" and called a study modeled on "Indianapolis 500 tactics" about the only lever available right now. Until changes like those arrive, how well a show night goes depends on the street plan the city already uses.
The One Block of 3rd Avenue That Sets Everything Else
Whenever the market is open, the City of Carmel closes 3rd Avenue to southbound traffic between the City Center Drive roundabout and the Center Garage entrance at 819 3rd Ave. SW. The Center says east-west traffic on City Center Drive and northbound traffic on 3rd Avenue are not affected. It directs event patrons to approach from the south. Its directions and parking page also links to a downloadable 2026 holiday traffic and parking map.
So a trip down Range Line Road toward the roundabout is the slow way in. Each of the garages below is free. The Christkindlmarkt's own getting-there guide, published Oct. 5, says Carmel parking is free.
| Garage | Address | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Center Garage | 819 3rd Ave. SW | Palladium, Tarkington and Studio Theater, approached from the south |
| Veterans Way Garage | 100 City Center Dr. | Center events, reached from Range Line Road |
| Civic Square Garage | 50 Red Truck Rd. | Center events, reached from Range Line Road |
| Sophia Square | 31 1st Ave. NW | Market visitors willing to walk |
| Midtown North | 145 Elm St. | Market visitors walking the Monon |
| Midtown South | 580 Veterans Way | Market visitors walking the Monon |
| Proscenium | 1225 Veterans Way | Market visitors willing to walk |
The Center says the nearest garage is the one at the Tarkington and Studio Theater building, just south of the Palladium off 3rd Avenue. The lots north of the Palladium are reserved for Salon 01 and Laser Flash guests. When Carter Green is closed for the market, extra accessible parking spaces open along southbound 3rd Avenue SW and on eastbound City Center Drive north of the Palladium.
Valet, Shuttle, Trolley and the Walk
Several ways in skip the garage search entirely. Each one suits a different kind of evening.
- Palladium valet. While the market is open, valet at the West Lobby entrance off 3rd Avenue SW starts 90 minutes before Palladium performances. For Center Presents events it costs $22, or $20 when bought in advance, if advance passes are available. The Fifth Third Bank Box Office can be reached at 317.843.3800.
- Free weekend shuttle. The market's shuttle runs Saturdays and Sundays. It leaves from the former CNO Financial Group campus at 550 College Drive and aims to drop riders on 3rd Avenue every 15 minutes during market hours. Two buses are in service, one seating 29 and one seating 40 that is ADA accessible. The market is adding capacity to the service, which started in 2025.
- Holiday Trolley. The free trolley links the market with several local destinations on Fridays from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 9 p.m., Nov. 21 through Dec. 19. It is not ADA accessible.
- Rideshare. The market suggests drop-offs on 3rd Avenue, preferably near its northwest corner. It also says this is not an official drop-off point and can get congested.
- On foot. Councilor Adam Aasen suggested that visitors without limited mobility park at other garages in the area and walk to the market. The market agreed, saying in its statement that off-site parking plus a walk "can often be a quicker, less stressful option, with the added benefit of enjoying festive holiday lights and decorations along the Monon Greenway."
The Calendar Where the Two Crowds Overlap
The market's regular hours are Wednesday and Thursday 4 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 9 p.m., and Sunday noon to 8 p.m. It is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Laid over the Center's holiday schedule, those hours show which nights are hardest. The weekend shows fall on shuttle days. The weeknight shows start after the market has already opened at 4 p.m.

| Sat.–Sun., Dec. 19–20 | Festival of Carols | Palladium | Final shuttle weekend before Christmas |
Two dates on that list run against the pattern. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy plays on a Tuesday, which falls outside the market's regular hours. The Melchior Marionettes matinee at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 19 starts before the market opens at noon. Annie has the most exposure. Its run starts Dec. 4 and covers every market weekend that follows. It includes a noon performance on Dec. 24, the market's last day, and continues through Dec. 26.
Building the Rest of the Evening Around the Show
Arriving from the south leaves the market and the rink within walking distance on both ends of a show. The Ice at Carter Green opens for the 2026–27 season on Nov. 21, the same day as the market, and stays open through Jan. 31, 2027. Sessions run Wednesday and Thursday 4 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to The Ice at Carter Green. The rink keeps going for five weeks after the last market hut closes. January is the quieter time to skate.
At the market, the 2026 vendor directory lists more than 60 huts. One first-time vendor is Ino Schaller Papiermaché, which sells papier-mâché ornaments and figures.
Two restaurant changes are close to the campus. Current in Carmel reported that Taylor's Bar & Table was targeting early December at 885 Monon Green Blvd., Suite 108, in Carmel City Center. The plan pairs family dining with a separate bar area for guests 21 and older, and the paper noted the timing could line up with Christkindlmarkt visitors. On Main Street, Ambrosia Hospitality Group said it would turn Josephine at 110 W. Main St. into a second Ambrosia location.
Saturday mornings have their own anchor a few blocks away. The Carmel Farmers Market's Winter Market runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at 611 3rd Ave. SW through March 27, 2027, with more than 60 vendors this season, Current reported. It closes at noon, the same hour the Christkindlmarkt opens on Saturdays. Shopping the winter market, parking once and walking north on 3rd Avenue fits the order of the day.
The Center's guidance for every seasonal event this year is to arrive early. For a Saturday show, that means getting to the Center Garage from the south before the shuttle buses and market crowds fill 3rd Avenue.
Holiday weekends on the Carter Green campus are part of what The Dakich Team knows about everyday life in Carmel. That covers which garage to use and which block of 3rd Avenue to avoid on a show night. If you're thinking about how your own Carmel home fits into the year ahead, we'd be glad to start with a complimentary home valuation, whenever you have time after the Christkindlmarkt.
